Peugeot Cars Popular In The 80s

by Kathy

Peugeot cars are very popular and well known for their reliability and sporty performance. The company was founded in 1810 in Paris, France by Jean-Pierre Peugeot. They started out as a blacksmiths shop, and then later they started to make tools and bicycle parts. In 1882, the company moved to Beaulieu-sur-Layon where they started making their first car models. The company quickly gained a reputation for making high quality, reliable cars.

They were one of the first companies to produce an automobile with an internal combustion engine, in 1889. Their production of motorized vehicles increased steadily over the years, until they were finally bought out by Ford Motor Company in 1928. Peugeot has since become a subsidiary of PSA Peugeot Citroen S.A., which is now the largest automaker in Europe.

In 1980s, Peugeot produced a line of successful sporty vehicles, and in 1988 they produced the first turbo diesel production car in the world. Peugeot has always been known for their high quality cars, but they have had some setbacks as well. The company suffered a major blow when the Renault group purchased them in the 1980s. This purchase made Peugeot become a part of the huge Renault group. The problems started when they tried to change the engine and front-wheel drive technology, and this ended up with a lawsuit. In 1985, Peugeot was acquired by the Chrysler Corporation, but then in 1987, they were bought back by the French government and returned to full ownership by Peugeot S.A. in 1990.

First Generation

The first generation of Peugeot 205 was launched in 1984, and it was a very successful model for Peugeot, especially because it was so cheap to produce.

The engine is 1.1 liter which had only 34 hp, but it could reach 140 km/h speed with manual transmission and it had a 5-speed gearbox. The car is also available with an automatic transmission that has 3 speeds only; 5th gear is for higher speeds.

The top speed with an automatic transmission is about 150 km/h or 93 mph, but with manual transmission it can reach 160 km/h or 100 mph speed limit without any problem at all! It is also interesting to note that this model has 3 different versions, and they are called as: XR, XS and XT. XR is the sporty version, and it has an aerodynamic body kit, bigger tires, a nice sporty interior, fog lights etc.

The XT version is also very sporty, but it has different rims than the XR model. The XS version is more of a family car; it has a lot of space for passengers, it is not so sporty but very practical for family use. It also has different rims than the other two versions. All three versions have leather seats which are available in 4 colors (black, blue, brown and red).

Second Generation

The second generation of Peugeot 205 was launched in 1990. This model was completely changed from the first generation; this time they were using front-wheel drive technology instead of rear-wheel drive.

They changed the engine as well; now they were using 1.4 liter engine that produced around 100 hp which gave the car better acceleration at lower speeds (0-100 km/h in about 14 seconds).

This new model was available with 5-speed manual transmission or 4-speed automatic transmission that can reach 180 km/h or 112 mph top speed. This model was available in two versions: BX and SX.

The BX version is a bit more practical and sporty than the SX version. The BX version has four doors, bigger trunk space, a nice interior and a lot of space for passengers as well. It also has automatic climate control and radio/cassette player.

The SX version is a bit more sporty; it has only two doors, but it has nice rims, sporty suspension, automatic climate control and radio/cassette player as well. This model is also very interesting because it was the first Peugeot car that had different body kits available for this model; they were called as: TX, XS, XT or XR (same as the first generation).
