by Julie

In 1986 the world was a very different place with many significant changes having taken place in the previous decade or so.

Social Politics

In 1986, there were a lot of world-shaking events, especially in the Middle East. A major earthquake hit Iran, and Tehran was leveled by a fire brought on by an arsonist. Another event which happened in 1986 was ” The Wall ”

The Civil War over the existence of Apartheid ended with Nelson Mandela leading a democratic government to power in South Africa. The USSR was shaken by the fall of communism and its hold on Eastern Europe. The Iran-Iraq war which had been going on since 1980 came to an end (after several setbacks).

In June, congress approved another military spending increase. New York City’s first female mayor took office, after decades under various men; and Pope John Paul II addressed an Islamic Summit of heads of state from over 50 countries at the Vatican (the first time he had done so since his election as pope).

Entertainment

By 1986, the world of entertainment had undergone a massive change. As technological advancements and innovation brought the world of cinema into a new age, people started to take more interest in the entertainment industry. With such innovations as 3D technology and fast-paced action movies, there was now a plethora of movies that could be enjoyed by anyone and everyone.

One such movie that greatly changed how people viewed entertainment was The Terminator, which was released in 1984. Although the story is rather simple at its core; an A.I (Artificial Intelligence) goes back in time to kill Sarah Connor before her son grows up to become a target for certain terrorists, it is still considered one of the best action movies of all time. This movie also changed the way future movies would be viewed, by putting a new twist on A.I’s and time travel in general.

Sports

1986 was notable for several reasons.   It was the year that Michael Jordan made his debut for the Chicago Bulls and won his first NBA Championship; it was also the year that Ben Johnson went over 100m at an Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea, which led to him being stripped of his gold medal; it was also the year when Kevin Coster became world champion at 23 years old; and it was also the year that Mark Spitz won seven gold medals at six consecutive Olympics.

There were a lot of events going on in the United States during 1986, such as the Super Bowl, World Series, and NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. The major sporting event that year was probably the Los Angeles Olympics. However, one very important sporting event took place during 1986: The June 12th All-America East Wrestling Championships at Madison Square Garden. This was a 16-team tournament with four rounds being fought between 9am and 11pm. 24 matches were held in total.
