80s Popular Items

by Julie

In the 80s, there were many popular items that people used all the time. You can find them being sported by the trendy kids on teen movies of the 1980s as well as on commercials. There are several items and trends that were popular during the 80s that still have a strong presence throughout the years, such as video games, music, and more. Here is a list of some of the most popular items in the 80s:

Video Games

Video games were one of the most popular things to do both at home and on consoles. There were three main systems which included Atari, Nintendo and Sega.

The earliest game systems were very primitive compared to what they are today, but they did bring families together as they could play against each other while away from their TV sets or in front of them. Most malls in America had video game arcades that you could play on for free, many times you could also purchase your favorite games there too.

The Walkman

The Walkman was a portable music player that allowed people to listen to their favorite songs wherever they were. The idea of being able to listen to music while you’re out and about was new at the time, so the item’s popularity skyrocketed. This device was very popular, especially because you would get headphones included in the package whenever you bought the music player.

If you were to watch a recent movie that was set in the 1980s, you would be sure to see a cool character sporting one of these.

Rubik’s Cube

The Rubik’s Cube is a famous puzzle toy that was developed in 1974. The toy was very popular during the 80s and became so because of the complexity. People challenged each other to figure out which one could be faster at solving it. It had about 47 different possible solutions, many of which were difficult to solve.

These types of puzzles were everywhere in stores such as Toys R Us and Sears at that time, and there were also many contests where people would compete to see who could solve their cube fastest.

Slap Bracelets

Slap bracelets were another popular item that was used by many people in the 1980s. Slap bracelets are metal chains that you wrap around your wrist, usually just below your elbow.

They were seen mostly on boys and girls as a way of showing off their style. They were trendy for the youth, especially because when you slap the bracelet onto your wrist, the bracelet would automatically wrap around it.

Leg Warmers

Due to cinema hits such as Footloose, kids everywhere decided that they needed to wear leg warmers too, no matter whether or not they were dancers. Traditionally, dancers use them to keep warmth in their legs muscles warm and avoid painful cramps. People decided it was a fashion staple in the 1980s, and even those who walked like they had two left feet!
