80s Strawberry Shortcake Dolls

by Kathy

Strawberry Shortcake is a very popular American doll from the 1980s. It consists of 3 dolls: Strawberry Shortcake, Strawberry Shortcake’s cousin Blueberry Muffin and Crumb Cake (a blueberry muffin). It is made by Mattel and distributed in the United States. The dolls were released between 1982 to 1985 and are still produced today.

A Background

In 1984, a line of Strawberry Shortcake Dolls were released by the Mattel Toy Company.  These dolls are very important to the history of the 80s.  They are not just dolls that are owned just by girls and children but they also own an entire subculture of collectors, nerds and people who love retro toys. For decades, these dolls have been one of the most sought after collectibles in America because like all other Barbie, American Girl and Bratz doll lines they come with a special signature Barbie head that is hard to find and can be valuable to collectors who want them.

This set of dolls included 11 different dolls and they were made by Mattel’s own sculptor John Meredyth Lucas who also sculpted all other Barbie doll prototypes up until their 2010 Collectors Edition release. The Strawberry Shortcake doll line came with three different doll dresses for the dolls which were made by Mattel’s in-house designer, Marvin Glass who was mainly known for sculpture work but he also designed costumes for all of Barbie’s film roles during the late 1950s and early 1960s.  These dresses varied from each other but they all included similar details such as a hand-sewn cover over the skirt hemline and leg openings that were decorated with golden embroidery that created small roses on them.

Strawberry Shortcake

The first doll is Strawberry Shortcake, a plump strawberry-loving girl with blonde hair, a pink dress and white polka dot pinafore, tights and shoes. She comes with a house that she can sit in or stand in front of. The doll has 2 head options: one is the original face while the second one is “With A Smile On Her Face”. The most popular Strawberry Shortcake doll was released in 1984 (Strawberry Shortcake’s Birthday). It was released as part of the “It’s Your First Birthday” series and it came along with a small book about Strawberry Shortcake which contained a few stories and poems about the girl. The book also contained information about her family, friends and Strawberry Shortcake’s pets.

Blueberry Muffin

Strawberry Shortcake’s cousin, Blueberry Muffin is not as popular as strawberries like strawberry shortcakes, but it should be that she has a lot more outfits than plain strawberry shortcakes. It has 2 different sets: one that includes 1 dress and 5 accessories, another one includes 2 dresses and 5 accessories. It has blue hair, blue dress, squared shirt, and green striped tights.

Crumb Cake

Strawberry Shortcake’s cousin Crumb Cake is a blueberry muffin with the name “crumb cake” on the back. The doll has brown eyes, red lips and pink cheeks. The doll’s hair is black with bangs and a strawberry on top of her head. Her outfit consists of a blue skirt and pink blouse as well as white tights underneath.
