80s Popular Middle Names

by Mackenzie

The 1980s were a time of great change. The 80s were a decade that saw the birth of grunge music and its rise to prominence as well as the birth of hip-hop.

In the 1980s, there were also many different types of people who chose to be named something other than their given birth name. For instance, in both men and women, names such as Michael, David, Robert, and Mary became more common because they were so much more popular during this decade than they had been in the past.

One thing that is notable about these names is that most have some sort of meaning or significance behind them, or sometimes taken from a famous figure of the 80s. Still, whatever the reason, there were some noteworthy popular middle names in the 1980s. These include:

Rose

In the 1980s, many girls had their mothers name them after their favorite flower. The popular family names for girls were Rose and Lily, with Mary being another common name choice among girls in the late 80s.

The name rose comes from the Latin word ‘rosa’. The name originally alludes to the flower plant from a genus of the same name. Some sources say that Rose was a Norman variant of the Germanic name Hrodohaidis. Then, the Normans of the Middle Ages brought it to England and they translated it into Old English, until it soon became Rose.

Marie

Marie is one of the most popular names for baby girls born in the 1980s. It is a French name that means “the star of the sea.” Many people were drawn to this name when it became popular during this decade, as Marie was also a French queen and an important person in history.

80s Popular Middle Names

David

This name was among the most popular in this decade, used as both first names and middle names. In fact, it was one of the most popular names for baby boys born at that time. This is a Hebrew name that means “beloved.” The reason it rose to fame in the 80s may be pointed to the existence of pop star David Bowie at the time.

Louise

This name was also very popular during the 1980s, and it is derived from Old German. This name means “famous or well-known,” and oftentimes referred to more specifically to mean “a famous warrior.”

It was first used as a feminine given name but gradually rose in popularity as a middle name. It is also notably the middle name of 80s pop star Madonna, as her full name is Madonna Louise Ciccone. This may have helped in making it immensely popular in the 80s.

Michael

Michael, which is another Hebrew name, means “Who is like God?” It can also mean “gift to God.” It is traditionally first used as a masculine given name, but many also use it as a middle name.

This may have been due to the popularity of pop star Michael Jackson at the time. Even though he was not universally beloved by everyone in the 80s, his music was extremely memorable and influential on many people who came after him.
