Fashion Trends that Came Back in the 80s and Stayed in Vogue

by Julie

Retro fashion trends from the 80s were quite out there, and for the most part, they were generally disliked by modern generations. However, if you look closely enough, you might be left surprised by how much of an impact the 80s have had on today’s fashion. What we don’t often realize is that the following five dominating fashion trends today came back in the 80s and have never left the fashion scene since then.

The Leather Jacket

Leather jackets in their earliest forms were first seen during the early 1900s, but they were nothing like the leather jackets we see today. Also, women did not wear leather jackets back then due to strict social norms. Supermodel Cindy Crawford and Tom Cruise brought the leather jacket back into fashion during the 80s and it never went out of style after that. Sure, they have changed in appearance and tailoring over time, but the classic leather jacket is still as much utilitarian as it is stylish.

Women’s Logo Bags

If you buy a bag from any luxury fashion house these days, the brand’s logo will be clearly visible on the bag’s front. That logo itself is a seal of quality and status in modern fashion. That trend of using polished metal logos to add even more oomph to a women’s bag was not a trend before Gucci tuned it into one during the late 70s to mid-80s. If you check for Gucci women accessories from the section for luxury womenswear at ssense.com, you will find that Gucci’s most stylish and regal collections still follow that trend with pride.

Women’s Denim Shorts

The 1960s are considered by many to be a pivotal age for women’s fashion and freedom of clothing. Therefore, it’s not a surprise that the classic women’s denim shorts first became popular in the 60s. However, it did not flourish into a full-blown fashion trend until the 70s and the 80s. Fast forward to modern times and not much has changed about the women’s denim short in design, but they have certainly become more commonplace.

The Polka Dot

Polka dots never went out of style, but the timeless fashion trend has seen its fair share of ups and downs for sure. After a decent run with swimming costumes between the 1920s and the 30s, polka dots surged in popularity again during the mid-1950s. This time, the polka dot design was worn by some of the biggest female stars of the time, including Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn. The trend did lose momentum among the general public and stars for some time after, but Julia Roberts and Princess Diana pulled back the polka dot dress in all its simple, yet elegant glory during the 1980s.

Yoga Pants

Yoga as a form of exercise gained massive popularity in the 1980s, along with the retro yoga outfits. Admittedly, yoga outfits for women have aged a lot better than those of men, especially when it comes to the classic yoga pants. Women’s trendy yoga pants are not as bright and glittery as they used to be back in the 80s, but they are still quite vibrant. Most importantly though, yoga pants are perfect for stretching. Whether you are lifting weights, running, or doing yoga, those tight pants are still the most popular choice for bottom-wear at the gym for women.

As you can see, many fashion trends from the 80s have never actually gone out of style.
