80s Popular Hindi Songs

by Kathy

The 1980s were a time of great change for Hindi cinema. From the early 1960s to the late 1970s, Hindi movies were not only popular but also well received by viewers across the country due to their high production values and realistic portrayals of life in India on the big screen. The same thing could be said about Hindi songs.

The music industry experienced steady growth in the ‘80s, with record sales to support it, but it also faced a major piracy market that was hard to stop. A lot of people were releasing pirated audio cassettes and VHS tapes in the music market.

Nevertheless, there were plenty of Bollywood love songs with poetic lyrics that became very popular in the 1980s. It was during that decade that the sound of the modern Hindi film industry emerged and paved the way for new musical explorations in the years to come. When they decided to combine the traditional Indian beats with the various western influences, it added a new dimension to those songs and helped them spread around the globe.

Here are some of the popular Hindi songs that were released throughout the 1980s:

“Ae Mere Humsafar” in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak

This song was sung by Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan. It also featured in the old Indian film, Mr. India, in 1987. Directed by Shekhar Kapur, the movie depicted a superhero character reflecting Indian cultures.

“Mere Rang Mein Rangane Wali” in Maine Pyar Kiya

This is a love duet sung by Indian singer S. P. Balasubrahmanyam. Furthermore, the song was created as part of the feature film under the name Maine Pyar Kiya (“I’ve Loved” in English). The movie was released in 1989 as a romantic musical movie depicting two leads that must work through family conflicts to stay strong together.

“Gali Gali Mein Phirta Hain” in Tridev

The singers for this song are Manhar Udhas and Alka Yagnik. This song was featured in the Indian movie Tridev, which was released in 1989. Tridev is an action thriller directed by Indian director Rajiv Rai, and it tells the suspenseful and action-packed story of robberies, crime lords, and corrupted politicians.

“Om Shanti Om” in Karz

Om Shanti Om is a song featured in a comedy-drama film under the same name. The movie itself is a dizzying blend of romance, satire, and fantasy-related themes. It stars internationally-renowned Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, opposite of equally dazzling and popular Deepika Padukone. It was the highest grossing film of 2007, the year it was released.

“Humein Tumese Pyaar Kitna” in Kudrat

This is yet another famous song that starred in an equally famous Bollywood movie. It is sung by Kishore Kumar. The movie itself came out in 1981, and it is written and directed by Chetan Anand. Furthermore, Bollywood stars including Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini took to the lead roles. The year it was released, the movie was declared a major box office hit. Even more, it won a Filmfare award for Best Story.
